Submersible pumps sit in the water and suit basements, ponds, and shallow flooding, they're simple to deploy and generally handle light debris well. Centrifugal pumps handle higher flow rates for construction site dewatering, but need priming and are typically positioned at the water's edge rather than submerged.

Diaphragm pumps handle muddy, silty water with solids that would quickly clog a standard centrifugal or submersible pump, making them the right choice for genuinely dirty floodwater or trench dewatering on clay sites.

Small submersible pumps move roughly 200–500 litres per minute, medium centrifugal pumps handle 500–1,000 litres per minute, and large diesel pumps move 1,000+ litres per minute for major dewatering jobs. Head height (how far up or how far along the water needs to travel) reduces the effective flow rate, so check both figures against your job, not flow rate alone.
