Compacting a sub-base properly
Light plates (50–75kg) suit driveways and patios with relatively shallow sub-base depths. Heavier reversible plates (100–400kg) handle deeper sub-bases, trenches, and road foundations where more compactive force is needed to properly consolidate thicker layers of hardcore or aggregate.
Compacting in layers rather than dumping the full depth of hardcore and compacting once gives a far more stable, even sub-base. Each lift should be compacted before the next is added, skipping this step is a common cause of driveways and patios settling unevenly after a season of weather.
Wacker plates can be used on block paving with a paving pad attachment to protect the surface from chipping and scuffing. Most depots supply paving pads on request, or can advise on the right plate weight for your specific paving job and block thickness.
