The right piece of lifting equipment depends on load weight, lift height, and ground conditions in roughly equal measure, a telehandler that copes easily with a muddy, uneven site would be complete overkill for moving pallets around a flat warehouse floor, where a pedestrian pallet truck or forklift does the job far more efficiently.

LOLER places a legal duty on whoever is using lifting equipment at work to ensure it has a valid thorough examination, typically every 6 or 12 months depending on the equipment type. Ask to see the certificate when equipment is delivered rather than assuming it is in date, particularly on longer hires.

Certification requirements vary by machine, CPCS or NPORS tickets are generally required for telehandlers and forklifts on commercial sites, while pallet trucks and hoists need no formal qualification but do need a competent, briefed operator. Operated hire is worth considering for one-off lifts where training up staff would not be cost-effective.
