Spike tines relieve light compaction, hollow tines pull out cores for a deeper, longer-lasting result.
Spike aerators
Light annual maintenance on lawns without heavy compaction or thatch build-up.
Hollow-tine aerators
Pulls out soil cores rather than just piercing, the best option for compacted or clay-heavy lawns.
Petrol self-propelled models
Larger lawns where covering ground quickly matters more than manoeuvrability.
Push aerators
Smaller domestic lawns and awkward corners a self-propelled machine cannot reach.
Getting the timing and technique right
Early autumn (September) is the ideal window for aerating most UK lawns, the grass is still growing so it recovers quickly, and the ground is usually workable without being waterlogged. A spring aeration in April can work too, but avoid mid-summer when the lawn is under drought stress and cannot recover.
Hollow-tine aeration pulls out small plugs of soil rather than simply piercing the ground, which genuinely relieves compaction rather than just making holes that close back up within weeks. On heavy clay soils common across much of the UK, hollow-tining followed by a top-dressing of sharp sand worked into the holes makes a noticeable difference to drainage the following winter.
Aerating a waterlogged or bone-dry lawn does more harm than good, the machine either clogs with wet clay or bounces off hard, baked ground. Water the lawn a day or two beforehand if it has been dry, and always aerate before overseeding or scarifying so seed and soil improver can get straight down into the loosened ground.
