Using an angle grinder safely and effectively

Disc diameter should match the grinder, not the other way round, fitting a 230mm disc rated for a slower grinder onto a faster small grinder is a serious safety risk as the disc can exceed its rated speed and shatter. Always check the maximum RPM marked on the disc against the grinder's spec.

The guard exists to deflect debris and disc fragments away from the operator's body, removing it to get better access to a cut is one of the most common causes of serious angle grinder injuries on site, repositioning the guard or choosing a smaller grinder is almost always the safer option.

Kickback happens when the disc binds in the material, typically at the start or end of a cut, holding the grinder with both hands and letting the disc reach full speed before it contacts the material reduces this risk significantly, as does keeping the cutting angle consistent rather than twisting the disc mid-cut.
