Diamond segment choice matters more than machine size, soft bond segments for hard cured concrete, hard bond segments for soft or abrasive floors.
Single-disc grinders
Smaller floor areas, edges, and touch-up work where manoeuvrability matters.
Planetary floor grinders
Multiple counter-rotating heads for faster, flatter results on larger warehouse and commercial floors.
Coating removal segments
Aggressive diamond segments to strip paint, epoxy, and old adhesive residue.
Polishing pads
Progressive grit resin pads for a ground and polished concrete finish.
Preparing a concrete floor properly
Matching the diamond segment bond to the concrete hardness is the single biggest factor in how well a grinding job goes. A soft bond segment on hard, well-cured concrete wears too slowly and glazes over, while a hard bond segment on soft or newly laid concrete wears away almost immediately. Most hire depots can advise on bond hardness once you describe the floor age and finish.
HSE guidance treats concrete dust as a serious occupational health risk, and dry grinding without extraction is one of the quickest ways to breach exposure limits on site. An M-class vacuum attached directly to the grinder captures dust at source, which is far more effective than relying on a dust sheet or ventilation alone, and keeps the job compliant with COSHH.
Before resin, epoxy, or self-levelling compound goes down, the floor needs a mechanical key and a laitance-free surface, not just a visually clean one. A moisture test (calcium chloride or relative humidity) alongside grinding is worth doing on ground floor slabs, since coating over a floor that is still curing or damp is one of the most common causes of coating failure in the following months.
Dust extraction required
Dry grinding concrete produces respirable crystalline silica dust, a serious health hazard covered by HSE Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) regulations. Always run a floor grinder with an M-class or H-class vacuum attached, and wear an FFP3 mask as a backup. Hire dust extraction
