Coring concrete and masonry accurately

A rig-mounted drill anchored properly into the surface will outperform a hand-held unit on accuracy every time once you are through more than a few centimetres of reinforced concrete, the rig keeps the bit perfectly perpendicular and stops the drift that happens when a hand-held unit meets rebar part-way through the core.

Wet cutting keeps the diamond segments cool and clears slurry from the cut, which extends bit life significantly compared to dry cutting on anything beyond light-duty holes. The trade-off is managing water and slurry runoff, so on upper floors or finished spaces a containment ring and wet vacuum are worth arranging alongside the drill.

Always scan the area with a cable and pipe detector before coring through a wall, floor, or ceiling, service penetrations are the single most common reason core drilling goes wrong on site, and hitting a live cable or pressurised pipe is far more costly than the few minutes a proper scan takes.
