Getting a concrete pour right from mix to finish

Trapped air is one of the most common causes of a weak, pitted concrete surface, running a poker vibrator through the wet mix immediately after pouring releases air pockets and settles the aggregate properly, skipping this step on anything beyond a small path or footing noticeably weakens the finished slab.

Timing the power float pass matters as much as using the right tool, floating too early drags aggregate to the surface and weakens it, floating too late and the surface has already begun to set, leaving a rough, unworkable finish, judging the right moment usually comes from experience with the specific mix and weather conditions on the day.

Beam screeds earn their place on anything beyond a small domestic slab, dragging a screed board by hand across a larger area almost always leaves low spots and high points that show up as ponding or trip hazards later, a vibrating beam screed gives a consistently level base in a fraction of the time.
