Getting square, accurate cuts

A bench saw earns its keep on repeatable cuts, once the rip fence is set and locked, every board comes off the same width without remeasuring each time, which is the main reason joiners reach for one over a circular saw for anything beyond a handful of cuts.

The riving knife and blade guard are not optional extras to remove for convenience, they prevent the workpiece binding on the blade and kicking back towards you, which is one of the most common serious injuries on a building site. Always use a push stick for the last 150mm of any narrow rip cut, never your fingers.

For flip-over saws switching between table and mitre modes, double check the fence and stops are re-set and locked before the first cut in each mode, a fence that has crept out of square gives cuts that look fine by eye but will not close up properly on a mitred frame or worktop joint.
