Choosing the right way to work at height

The Work at Height Regulations set out a hierarchy, avoid work at height where possible, then use the safest equipment for the duration and repetition of the task. A quick 20-minute gutter clear favours a ladder, while a full day of facade painting is far better suited to a tower or powered platform that lets you stand and work rather than balance and stretch.

Scaffold towers need no licence to use but PASMA training is strongly recommended above 2.5m, and the tower must be built following the manufacturer's sequence on firm, level ground with outriggers fitted correctly, rushing the build sequence is one of the most common causes of tower instability.

Powered access generally needs an IPAF licence matched to the platform category, 3a for static scissor lifts and 3b for mobile boom lifts being the most common categories on construction sites. Operated hire with a qualified driver is available where training up your own staff would not be worthwhile for a one-off job.
